Electronic Portfolios

Electronic Portfolios are a creative means of organizing, summarizing, and sharing  information, and ideas about teaching and/or learning, along with personal and professional growth. The reflective process of portfolio development can be as important as the final product. In many cases, they are used as part of faculty and student evaluation along with other assessment tools such as standardized tests. A portfolio is a sampling of the breadth and depth of a person's work conveying the range of abilities, attitudes, experiences, and achievements.”
Five Basic Processes for the Creation of an Academic Portfolio
  1. Collection
  2. Selection
  3. Reflection
  4. Projection
  5. Presentation
CollectionA relatively short collection of materials that summarizes and highlights an individual’s activities as a teacher and researcher.
SelectionWhy are you creating the portfolio? Who is reading it, and why?
Reflection - Thinking critically about your total learning, teaching, and research experiences
Projection (or Direction) - compare the reflections to the standards/goals and performance indicators, and set learning goals for the future.
Presentation - share the portfolio with peers and receive feedback
Advantages of an Academic Portfolio
  1. Information in multi-media  (text, graphics, animation, sound, video)
  2. Hypertext environment: e.g., menus, hyperlinks, searchable information
  3. Non-linear thinking; “deep” organization
  4. Asynchronous access for others (for feedback and collaboration

Wiki

Wiki
A wiki (sometimes spelled "Wiki") is a server program that allows users to collaborate in forming the content of a Web site. A wiki is a web site that lets any visitor become a participant:  you can create or edit the actual site contents without any special technical knowledge or tools. All you need is a computer with an Internet connection. A wiki is continuously “under revision.” It is a living collaboration whose purpose is the sharing of the creative process and product by many. One famous example is Wiki-pedia, an online encyclopedia with no “authors” but millions of contributors and editors. The word "wiki" comes from Hawaiian language, meaning "quick" or "fast."The teacher creates the content on the wiki server (website). The students can view, edit, or comment on the content.
Teacher discretion: It can be designed so student edits may only be made with teacher approval.

Characteristics

  1. Easy editing –Wikis can be used like other word document
  1. Multi model –It may contain images embedded videos and links to external websites
  2. Collaborative-   Wiki allows you to constantly monitor the changes done by member in the wiki

Cloud Computing

The practice of storing regularly used computer data on multiple servers that can be accessed through the Internet is called cloud computing
Cloud Computing offers the ability to access software or information that can be delivered over the internet, on demand, without the need to store it locally. In cloud computing, applications are provided and managed by the cloud server and data is also stored remotely in the cloud configuration. Users do not download and install applications on their own device or computer; all processing and storage is maintained by the cloud server.

There are three basic kinds of cloud service models.

  1. Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)
  2. Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)
  3. Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)

www generation

Web 1.0
Web 1.0 is the first generation of the web. Web 1.0 was mainly a read-only web. Web 1.0 was static and somewhat mono-directional. Businesses could provide catalogs or brochures to present their productions using the web and people could read them and contacted with the businesses. Web 1.0 is simply an information portal where users passively receive information without being given the opportunity to post reviews, comments, and feedback.
Web 2.0
It is 2nd generation of the www that focused on the ability for people to collaborate and share information online. Web 2.0 is the name used to  describe the second generation of the World Wide Web, where it moved static HTML pages to a more interactive and dynamic Web experience. Web 2.0 encourages participation, collaboration, and information sharing. Examples of Web 2.0 applications are Youtube, Wiki, Flickr, Facebook, and so on.
Web 3.0
In Web 3.0, computers can interpret information like humans and intelligently generate and distribute useful content tailored to the needs of users. One example of Web 3.0 is Tivo, a digital video recorder. Its recording program can search the web and read what it finds to you based on your preferences.

Virtual Labs

The Virtual Laboratory is an interactive environment for creating and conducting simulated experiments: a playground for experimentation. Virtual laboratory is to provide students a chance to perform experiments using the internet and visual aids without having the equipments at their end. The Virtual lab program presents a unique opportunity to boost the quality of education, deepen understanding, and provide the necessary practical skills to young minds through cost effective outreach and distance learning activities. Minister for Human Resource Development, Government of India has launched Virtual Labs — a collection of ninety-one virtual laboratories containing hundreds of experiments in nine disciplines of science and engineering. Two types of virtual labs have been developed under this project. In the Simulation Based Virtual Labs the experiments are modeled using mathematical equations.

Virtual learning Environment

Virtual learning Environment
Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs)  is a platform with the aim of supporting learning and teaching activities across the internet. A virtual learning environment (VLE)  allows online interactions of various kinds to take place between tutors and learners making use of computer and internet . A VLE is an education system based on web that models the real world education with virtual classes test etc.. A VLE will normally work over the Internet and provide a collection of tools such as those for assessment (particularly of types that can be marked automatically, such as multiple choice), communication, uploading of content, return of students' work, peer assessment, administration of student groups, collecting and organizing student grades, questionnaires, tracking tools, etc. New features in these systems include wikis, blogs, and 3D virtual learning spaces. It is originally created for distance education, VLEs are now most often used to supplement traditional face to face classroom activities, commonly known as Blended Learning. In India still VLE is not popular, there are only few colleges which provide VLE.
Features of VLE
  • ·        A VLE is a social space .
·        The VLE should provide students with access to a learning environment (not just a collection of resources!) where they can ask questions, explore resources and ideas
·        The VLE provide students with access to the learning environment from any location, at any time, through a range of possible devices
·        To make learning enjoyable and pressure free.
·        To provide education to physically disabled students and students

E-content

Any digitized content that can facilitate the learning process and/or learning outcome can be termed as e-content Any content product available in a digital form and it typically refers to music, information and images that are available for distribution on electronic media is called e-content. E-content is generally designed to guide students through lot of information in a specific task. An e-content package can be used as a teacher in the virtual classroom situations. The quality of learning depends not only on the form of how the process is carried out but also on what content is taught and how the content is presented.
E-content development requires huge amounts of creativity both at   'information' level  as well as the 'technology' level.
  Phases of e-content development
  1. Planning
ü  overall plan to develop educational content
ü  identify basic information needed for development
ü  Estimate time, budget and resources
  1. Design Phase
ü  To conduct a primary analysis of learning tasks, and create storyboards
ü  Conduct goal and task analysis
ü  Develop initial content ideas
  1. Development Phase
ü  actual production of the e-content
ü  create the e-content by mixing of texts, audio, video, animations , references, blogs, links, and MCQs (multiple choice questions)
  1. Testing phase
·         test the spelling mistakes, content errors, clarity of pictures , relevant videos, appropriate audios, timing of animations, and hyperlinks.
  1. Implementation Phase
·         explains how to install and how to use it and their difficulties experienced while using e-content
  1. Evaluation Phase
·         feedback from both learners and instructors

e-content development initiatives in India :
           NME-ICT, UGC-CEC

National Mission on Education through ICT (NME-ICT), has assigned work to the UGC for development of e-content in 71 subjects at postgraduate level.  High quality, curriculum-based, Interactive content in different subjects across all disciplines of social sciences, arts, fine arts & humanities, natural & mathematical sciences, linguistics and languages is being develop under this initiative named e-PG Pathshala. The Mission shall work on the philosophy of encouraging all the scholars and academicians to generate e-content. This may even result in generation of more than one set of e-content on one topic in any given discipline. A large quantity of e-learning material, in digital form, is already available. Therefore, the Mission shall undertake an exercise to evaluate the already available e-learning material, as well as the one which is being or is to be generated, and grade them for the benefit of learners. The Mission shall also attempt to provide guidance to them in order to facilitate their search for quality material.
